Anaesthetics from throughout Australia and New Zealand will descend on Cairns in 2025 for the ANZ annual scientific meeting where a major focus will be on sustainability.
The 2025 Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) will be held at the Cairns Convention Centre from May 2 to 6, bringing together leading experts in anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, and pain medicine.
The event is expected to attract over 1,600 delegates, further cementing Cairns’ reputation as a premier destination for business events in the medical and health sectors.
Delegates will reportedly engage in a comprehensive program featuring local, national, and international speakers, along with workshops to support members’ skills and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements.
In addition to the scientific sessions, the 2025 ANZCA ASM will offer social events at some of Cairns’ most iconic venues, providing delegates with opportunities for networking and relaxation.
Sustainability will be one of the key themes for the conference which is inherently at the forefront of ANZCA’s initiatives. Anaesthetists are adopting sustainable practices by minimising gas wastage, using less harmful gases, and promoting the recycling and reuse of equipment.
In terms of sustainability measures at its conferences, since 2016 ANZCA has eliminated items like satchels, bottled water, and paper-based tickets, and has collaborated with venues to ensure sustainable catering practices. The Cairns Convention Centre was chosen partly for its sustainability initiatives and use of local producers, helping to reduce food mileage.
ANZCA 2025 ASM Convenor, Dr Andrew Potter, expressed his enthusiasm for next year’s Cairns based meeting.
“We are thrilled to welcome our colleagues to Cairns for this significant scientific meeting,” he said.
“Our program is designed to provide evidence-based insights that will shape the future of our profession, while also addressing sustainability and personal wellbeing. We look forward to showcasing the incredible work being done in our field against the beautiful backdrop of our hometown.”
Cairns Convention Centre general manager, Janet Hamilton, emphasized the importance of sustainability when managing conventions and ANZCA 2025 would be no exception.
“It is important as an industry that both clients and venues look for ways to be leaders in delivering sustainable events,” she said.
“We aim for energy efficiency, reduced food waste, recycling opportunities, and the use of sustainable products and suppliers. Our centre focuses on sustainability, featuring a sunscreen façade, rainwater storage, EV charging stations, and energy-efficient lights and fans.”
ANZCA 2025 is being supported by the Queensland Government.
