Bourke Shire Council in New South Wales may have pipped other worthy contenders to the post for the ‘Most Senseless COVID Response’ award, for recently ordering the killing of 16 rescue dogs over concerns that the volunteers travelling to collect them might have COVID.
The dogs included a mother and her new-born puppies, and the incident attracted worldwide media coverage including a story in the Washington Post.
The act has received condemnation from animal rights activists all over the world, including comedian Rickey Gervais who tweeted a link to the story, with the comment “Stupid c***s”.
Both Australia and New Zealand are attracting wider international attention and comment over their current COVID responses, from blanket lockdowns, curfews, rubber bullets for crowd control, to their low vaccination rates compared to other countries.
