From the 14th of April the requirements in Queensland to show proof of vaccination and to check-in to enter venues, will end.
Dr John Gerrard, Queensland Chief Health Officer said there was clear evidence that COVID infections had reduced. “Now that we’ve reached greater than 90% of those over the age of 12 vaccinated, it is time for us to move on,” he said.
The introduction of the highly transmissible, but less virulent Omicron COVID variant in December rendered the QR check-in system useless, and this redundant requirement will also come to an end.
The check-in requirement has proven to be an impediment to business, with many short stay interstate visitors not bothered to get the app and deciding forego eating out at a restaurant or a taking drink at the bar.
The LNP opposition leader David Crisafulli pointed out that his party was ‘howled’ down for advocating the measure in parliament the week before, but “Lo and behold it is now government policy. We’d like to know, what has changed so drastically in a handful of days?” he said.
