Melbourne is this week hosting the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit, with more than 1000 attendees expected.
It is the latest in a string of high-profile cancer-focused conferences for the Victorian capital that is fast developing a reputation as a world leader in medical research and particularly cancer research.
The summit is running from November 18 to 20 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC).
Being held in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit comes on the back of the city hosting the hugely successful World Indigenous Cancer Conference.
Backed by government, academia and research institutions across the Asia-Pacific region, this summit reinforces Melbourne’s role as a hub for innovation and collaboration in cancer care and research.
The theme, “Bridging Divides, Building Futures”, reflects the goal of reducing inequalities in cancer care and shaping the future of cancer control.
The Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB), in collaboration with Cancer Council Victoria, the VCCC Alliance, Monash Comprehensive Cancer Consortium, the McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer, and the Victorian Government, led the successful bid to host the event.
The bureau is encouraging others working in the field of cancer research to bid for future conferences for Melbourne.
Cancer Council Victoria CEO, Todd Harper, said: “To be world leading you have to be globally connected, you have to be engaging with other leading organisations, you have to take the opportunities to learn and share your knowledge.”
