Brisbane looks to business events as part of Olympic legacy planning

Queensland Tourism and Events Minister Andrew Powell said business events are a key component of the visitor economy strategy

Queensland’s tourism and events sector is increasingly positioning business events as a key beneficiary of infrastructure investment linked to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

While public attention has focused on sporting venues and transport projects, industry leaders are emphasising the role that convention, incentive and corporate events will play in delivering long-term economic benefits from the Games.

Brisbane has already seen significant investment in hotel supply, aviation capacity and visitor infrastructure over recent years. The city has added thousands of hotel rooms since winning the Olympic bid in 2021, while additional developments remain under construction or in planning.

Business Events Australia figures continue to show that conference and incentive visitors spend considerably more than leisure travellers and often visit outside traditional holiday periods, making the sector an attractive target for destination planners.

Brisbane Airport has steadily rebuilt and expanded its international network since the pandemic, restoring services across Asia, North America and New Zealand and improving accessibility for international delegates.

The city’s major business events infrastructure is also expanding. The Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre continues to attract international association meetings and corporate conferences, while developments around South Bank, Queen’s Wharf Brisbane and the inner-city entertainment precincts are increasing options for organisers seeking off-site functions and delegate experiences.

Queensland Tourism and Events Minister Andrew Powell recently described business events as a key component of the state’s visitor economy strategy, noting that major events create opportunities that extend well beyond the duration of the event itself.

Industry stakeholders view the period leading up to 2032 as an opportunity to attract larger international congresses and incentive programmes that may previously have bypassed Queensland in favour of Sydney, Melbourne or Singapore.
