‘Business as usual’ only, won’t cut it

Gus Balbontin, one of the keynote speakers at AIME 2025.

From the get-go, Gus Balbontin’s AIME 2025 keynote was exciting, gripping, funny and tell-me-more. Former Lonely Planet executive and current speaker, investor, explorer, advisor, rebel, thinker and father captivated the audience at the recent Asia Pacific Incentives and Meetings Event held in Melbourne.

Balbontin delivered a masterclass in adaptability and innovation. Drawing from his journey from Patagonia to Byron Bay, he stressed the critical importance of embracing change in today’s rapidly evolving business landscape.

He shared some personal insights to set the stage for his central message: resourcefulness trumps resources. He challenged attendees to seek novelty, sharing his annual tradition of tackling new skills – from pinball to astrophotography – to maintain adaptability.

Balbontin presented an innovative approach that Business As Usual (BAU) is no longer enough to survive and grow, but applying radical jumps and emphasising a “simple, small, now” approach will yield results in the long run. He urged engagement with new technologies – from cryptocurrencies and 3D printing to virtual reality and algorithm writing. Throughout, Balbontin related his insights to the events industry, encouraging continuous adaptation.

He challenged the audience to be the drivers of change. His dynamic presentation, blending personal anecdotes, industry insights, and provocative ideas, delivered a powerful message: in our rapidly changing world, adaptability and continuous innovation are key to survival and success, especially in the events industry.
