The InterContinental Sydney Double Bay, long regarded as one of Sydney’s most elegant event venues, is set to be demolished to make way for a $1 billion mixed-use redevelopment.
Approved by the NSW Eastern City Planning Panel, the redevelopment at 33 Cross Street will replace the six-storey hotel with an eight-storey precinct featuring boutique accommodation, luxury residences, offices, retail and wellness facilities. Developers have pledged a “design-forward” precinct intended to revitalise Double Bay’s commercial core.
For the event industry, however, the closure removes one of Sydney’s most iconic function spaces. The InterContinental hosted everything from corporate launches and board dinners to weddings and VIP receptions — its prestige and five-star service helping anchor Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs as a premium event destination.
While the new project includes a 39-room boutique hotel, current plans do not specify dedicated large-scale function or ballroom facilities. Planners warn this could create a temporary venue gap, displacing corporate events to the CBD or other luxury hotels.
