Gabba to be rebuilt ahead of 2032 Olympic Games

Brisbane’s Gabba cricket stadium is set to be “rebuilt” ahead of the 2032 Games

The Queensland government announced plans for a $27 billion project to rebuild the Gabba ahead of the 2032 Olympic Games. This will be part of a major revitalisation of the area, which will include connections to Cross River Rail and Brisbane Metro, and pedestrian access via green bridges across the river to South Bank and the CBD.

The Gabba grounds was first established in 1895 and had its last redevelopment in 2005, and is losing out on events because of its limited capacity and facilities.

“It must be upgraded to maintain our competitiveness for international sport and events,” said Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

“It’s no secret that Queensland is losing out on major sporting events already – and the tourism, jobs and investment that come with them because The Gabba is not up to scratch.”

The new stadium will increase its capacity to 50,000 seats, with better viewing and access for spectator viewing, improved facilities for all sporting participants and easier access to transport.

“The current Gabba is an international icon, but a tired one. In some circumstances people in wheelchairs can only access their allocated seats using the goods lift,” said deputy premier Steven Miles.

“It’s unacceptable. Queensland athletes and fans deserve a modern, accessible, safe, fit-for-purpose major stadium that will attract and host world-class national and international sporting and entertainment events.
