Interview – Peter King ‘Why we need a single voice’ – part one

In this interview Peter King, Chair of the newly formed Australian Business Events Association, provides a candid account of why the associations for the business events sector were unable to adequately communicate the needs and pains of the industry to government over COVID, and the some of the challenges he faced at the time, as Chief Executive of the Melbourne Convention Centre.

He explains the fine line that organisations that are partly funded by government or who have government clients, such as convention bureaux and convention centres, had to tread over this period when they sat across the table to governments to advocate industry concerns.

He provides compelling reasons for the unification of business events associations into one body – the Australian Business Events Association, to provide legitimacy and cut-through to governments.
