Qantas prepares for Project Sunrise era

The launch forms a key part of the airline’s broader strategy to strengthen its premium market position

Qantas is continuing preparations for the launch of its highly anticipated Project Sunrise services, with the airline positioning the ultra-long-haul flights as a premium offering aimed squarely at business and corporate travellers.

The project will eventually see non-stop flights operate from Sydney to London and New York — among the longest commercial flights in the world — eliminating the need for stopovers in Singapore, Dubai or Los Angeles.

The airline’s specially configured Airbus A350-1000 aircraft are currently under development and are expected to feature a significantly lower passenger count than traditional long-haul aircraft, with an increased focus on premium cabins, wellness and traveller comfort.

According to recent reporting by Executive Traveller, Qantas is continuing to refine the onboard experience for the flights, including dedicated wellbeing zones designed to help reduce fatigue during journeys expected to exceed 19 hours.

The aircraft will include:

  • Six First suites
  • More than 50 Business suites
  • Premium Economy seating
  • A dedicated “Wellbeing Zone” for stretching and movement

The airline believes there is strong demand from high-value travellers willing to pay a premium for the convenience of direct services between Australia and major global financial centres.

For corporate travel buyers, the flights could significantly reshape long-haul travel planning. While fares are expected to sit above conventional one-stop alternatives, Qantas is betting that time savings, reduced transit stress and improved productivity will justify the premium for many organisations.

The launch also forms a key part of the airline’s broader strategy to strengthen its premium market position against growing competition from Middle Eastern and Asian carriers.

The first Project Sunrise services are currently expected to commence in 2027, although aircraft delivery schedules and certification processes remain ongoing.
