Rotary International has confirmed it will relocate its 2027 International Convention from Dubai to Barcelona, Spain, citing geopolitical uncertainty and the need to ensure a stable, accessible destination for its global membership.
The convention, one of the largest recurring global association events, will now take place at Fira de Barcelona from 26–30 June 2027, bringing together an expected 20,000 delegates from more than 140 countries.
Rotary said the decision was driven by ongoing instability in parts of the Middle East, which has created uncertainty around travel logistics, security, and long-term planning for large-scale international gatherings. While Dubai remains a major global events hub, the organisation opted to prioritise predictability and ease of access for attendees travelling from across the world.
In a statement, Rotary International said the move was made to “ensure the best possible experience for our members and the continued success of our global convention,” noting that large events require long lead times and confidence in operating conditions.
The relocation reflects a broader trend across the business events sector, where organisers are increasingly factoring geopolitical risk and airspace disruption into destination decisions.
The convention is expected to deliver a significant boost to Barcelona’s visitor economy. Industry estimates suggest an economic impact of more than €60–70 million, driven by accommodation, hospitality, transport and local services over the five-day event.
Barcelona has a strong track record of hosting major international congresses and offers extensive convention infrastructure, with Fira de Barcelona recognised as one of Europe’s leading exhibition venues.
