Western Sydney’s growing need for hotel accommodation was the focus of the second Destination Western Sydney Hotel Forum, held on 21 May and hosted by the Western Sydney Tourism Taskforce NSW.
The event brought together representatives from hotel groups, developers, tourism organisations and government agencies to discuss accommodation supply across one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions.
A key driver behind the forum was the upcoming opening of Western Sydney International Airport, which is expected to significantly increase visitor numbers and business activity throughout the region.
Discussions centred on future hotel development opportunities, investment trends and the role accommodation infrastructure will play in supporting Western Sydney’s visitor economy.
According to figures highlighted at the forum, New South Wales is expected to require more than 40,000 additional hotel rooms by 2035, with Greater Sydney accounting for around three-quarters of that demand.
The forum featured speakers from major industry organisations including Accor, IHG Hotels & Resorts, EVT Hotels, Holdmark Property Group, Colliers Hotels and Destination NSW.
Western Sydney Tourism Taskforce Chair David Borger said the region was entering a period of significant growth and that accommodation development would be critical to supporting future business, leisure and event-related travel.
The forum forms part of broader efforts to position Western Sydney as a major tourism, business and investment destination as infrastructure projects including Western Sydney International Airport and the Aerotropolis continue to progress.
For the hotel sector, the event provided an opportunity to examine future demand and explore how the region’s accommodation supply can keep pace with population growth, increased visitation and new business opportunities.
